On Monday the 4th of January 2020, The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced that England will join Scotland & Northern Ireland for yet another UK National Lockdown. Boris Johnson stated that this was mostly due to the new variant and continued to say that scientists have confirmed that the new variant is 50 to 70 percent more transmissible.
Hospitals are now under more pressure than anytime since the start of the pandemic, in England alone hospital patients have increased by a third to almost 27 000. That number is 40 percent higher than the first peak back in April of 2020 the prime minister added.
Clinically vulnerable people
The Prime Minister continued to say that clinically vulnerable people should now start Shielding once again, and that they would receive a letter about what this means for them. All Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and colleges across England must move to remote provision from tomorrow (5th of January 2021) except for vulnerable children as well as the children of Key Workers.
He compared the difference between this new lockdown and the first one back in early 2020, stating that this time the UK is now rolling out the biggest vaccination programme in UK history, stating that the UK has now vaccinated more of its people than combined countries of Europe. This comes as the UK’s own Oxford Zeneca vaccine has today arrived in the supply chain.
By mid February the NHS expects to offer the first vaccine dose to everyone in the four top priority groups. This includes:
- All residents in care homes including the carers
- Everyone over the age of 70
- All frontline health and social care workers
- Everyone who is clinically extremely vulnerable
Boris Johnson then finished his speech by addressing everyone across the UK that he knows how tough this is and how frustrated the people are, “I know that you have had more than enough of Government guidance about defeating this virus” he said. But now more than ever, we must pull together. He then added that the people should follow these news rules immediately and that they will become law from the early hours of Wednesday morning (6th of January 2021). Boris Johnson also stated that the week ahead will be the hardest yet and that he believes we are entering the last phase of this struggle.
